Mary works across a variety of mediums including textiles, drawing and print with a focus on human rights issues affecting women and children. Much of her work combines stitched and hand-drawn images often onto three dimensional constructions, layering additional meaning to each piece. Her work highlights the extreme difficulties faced by women even now in our ‘enlightened’ times. She hopes that her work is a ‘call to arms’.

Woven textiles, bandages, copper, enamel and stitch, The Cut is a piece made to highlight the issue of ‘cutting’ or FGM (female genital mutilation). This practice while illegal in many countries, is still carried out clandestinely in some and openly in others. It is estimated that FGM affects 137,000 women and girls in the UK , in addition to millions around the world. This artwork echoes a campaign for women to own their own bodies and to be free of the status of a ‘commodity’ that can be bought and sold.
